MAARIF INSTITUTE FOR CULTURE AND HUMANITY

The founding statute of the Maarif Institute For Culture and Humanity asserts that it is a non-profit and non-governmental organization committed to being a cultural institution promoting the value of Islam, humanity, and keindonesiaan (Indonesianness). These three areas are the main and most important concerns of Professor Ahmad Syafii Maarif, the former Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Board and the former President of the World Conference on Religion for Peace (WCRP), throughout his intellectual and activist life.

The MAARIF Institute is an inseparable part of the reform movement of Islamic thought in Indonesia resulting from the dynamic of humanity and its contemporary challenges. The growing complexity of the problems of humanity requires a new understanding  of Islamic teachings on  issues such as  democracy, human rights, pluralism, gender, interfaith and civilizational dialogue.

It is commonly perceived that the programs and activities of the MAARIF Institute are closely connected to the sociological needs of Muhammadiyah, although there is no organizational relationship between Muhammadiyah and MAARIF. Muhammadiyah is commonly understood as a representation of the largest modern-moderate Muslim movement in Indonesia which devotes its activities to the promotion of Islamic thought, da’wa, and social actions. Through Maarif Institute, we seek to promote reformation of Islamic thought within Muhammadiyah movement and to enlighten and empower the moderate element in Indonesia.
